I’ve decided to start blogging about my favorite photos I’ve taken since I started posting to flickr. Every so often I’ll post a couple more with brief descriptions and reasons why I like them. I’m hoping not only to share these pics with my readers, but also inspire myself to take better photos and learn what I like and dislike about the ones I’ve taken.
You will have to bare with me for awhile. I’m posting these in chronological order, so my early photos will be much less interesting. These started back in the day when I shot everything on auto and didn’t put much effort into thinking about framing, lighting, white balance, etc…
This flower pic I took at my parents farm. Like so many other flower shots, it looks “cool” with the narrow depth of field. I like the fact that the flower is off center. I think this makes the photo more interesting somehow. I also like the background. It’s way more interesting than most of my other flower shots that just have the ground in the background. This one has lots of colors and textures… even though it’s all out of focus.
I love this shot. Our dog Lotus got a cactus thorn in her paw and my parents are doing their best to extract it. I feel like everyone in this photo has a purpose, and everyone together in the photo is telling a complete story. Its a perfect moment in time caught in a photo.

I love that second shot for the exact reasons you describe. I felt like I understood the story and everyones role before you even described it, and can imagine the dog trying to wiggle away while your dad holds it gently. So real.
I took a similar shot to your first one, here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/slip/2667912323/
Both photos are very good, but the second I think is excellent! Poor dogie.. lucky he has someone to take care of his paws!Do you know why your dad covered the dog’s eyes?
I think he wanted to calm her down and keep her from seeing what was going on. She’s kind of nervous at times.
One of the best pieces I’ve received with regards to post-processing is to be brutal when cropping to remove anything that doesn’t contribute to the central idea. Looking back at this shot a week later I still really like how there aren’t many distractions outside of that central concept.
i am impressed and totally in love with the flower picture! i think i like that the red stands out not only because everything else is out of focus… but just the contrast of the colors alone.
and the second one makes me miss lotus. hope she’s all better
